TUNCOBEACH Back to the guide

Two-day itinerary

48 hours in El Tunco, without rushing it.

This itinerary leaves space for weather, ocean conditions, and the conversations that make a coastal trip memorable. Move the pieces around rather than treating the clock as a rule.

Day one: arrive and learn the village

Morning or early afternoon

Check in, confirm your return transportation, and walk the central streets before committing to a schedule. Find the entrances to the beach, note where the shore becomes rocky, and ask your lodging about the day’s safest swimming area.

Have a light meal and arrange a surf lesson for that afternoon or the following morning. If you have traveled a long distance, skip the water and save your energy.

Late afternoon

Take a guided beginner session or watch the surf from shore. Afterward, rinse off, hydrate, and choose a sunset spot with a clear western view. The transition from afternoon heat to evening is one of El Tunco’s best daily rituals.

Evening

Try a local dinner—pupusas, seafood, grilled meats, or ceviche—then follow live music only if you still have energy. Friday and Saturday are busiest. On quieter nights, a slow walk and an early sleep set up a better second day.

Day two: coast or mountains

Early morning

Start with coffee and the ocean. Experienced surfers can arrange a guided session based on the forecast; everyone else can walk the village while streets are calm. Eat a complete breakfast after the water.

Midday option one: Tamanique

A guided trip toward Tamanique offers inland scenery and waterfalls, subject to access, weather, and trail conditions. Wear secure footwear, carry water, and use a guide who understands current river conditions. Do not jump into pools without local confirmation of depth and hazards.

Midday option two: stay coastal

If you prefer a slower day, visit another nearby beach with arranged transportation, have a long lunch, or schedule a second coached surf session. Avoid stacking too many stops simply because they are close on a map.

Final evening

Return before sunset, revisit the place you liked most, and choose dinner based on atmosphere rather than online rankings alone. Confirm your airport or San Salvador ride before going out for the night.

What to reserve

Reserve lodging, airport transportation, and any guided excursion. Surf lessons are often easier to schedule after local conditions are known, but contact a school in advance during holiday periods. Restaurant reservations may help for larger groups and special events.

What to leave flexible

Leave surf timing, waterfall access, and outdoor plans flexible. Rain, traffic, tide, and swell can change the best order. A useful El Tunco trip is measured less by the number of stops than by how well each stop fits the day.
